Indiana Rowing Heads to B1G Championships Sunday
May 17, 2013
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana Rowing team will head north to Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis for the 2013 Big Ten Championships on Sunday, May 19.
Racing gets underway at 9 a.m. ET with the Second Novice 8 and will wrap up at 11 a.m. with the First Varsity 8. The Hoosiers enter Sunday's championship with first-time wins over Michigan State in the First Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8, and Minnesota in the First Varsity 4. Indiana took sixth overall at the 2012 Big Ten Championships.
The Hoosiers are coming off a third place finish at the Dale England Cup on Lake Lemon in Bloomington. Highlighting the regatta was IU's First Novice 8 boat beating Iowa on Friday and then topping Alabama in Saturday's morning session by 18 seconds. The Hoosiers crossed the finish line in 7:24.7, ahead of the Crimson Tide who finished in 7:42.2. In the afternoon session, the wind picked up and created some chop on the water. The Hoosiers toughed out the rough water conditions and knocked off Notre Dame (8:09.8) by five seconds to take first in 8:04.9.
"The last three weeks since the Dale England Cup, we spent the first week working on selection," said head coach Steve Peterson. "We went back through when we were doing seat racing to make to sure that the line-ups that we had we felt like were the fastest possible line-ups that we could put together for Big Ten's. Since then, we've actually been working on race specifics. The line-ups did shuffle around. I think we have some people excited for the simple fact that we've never raced these line-ups before. We're pretty excited about it. With working on the race specifics now, we're starting to see the speed that we expected to see earlier in the season so I think going into Big Ten's people are pretty excited."
This year's championship will be shown on the BTN on Sunday, May 26 at 5 p.m. ET.
