BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana Rowing's historic season continues as Alice Wright has been named the Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Year, announced by the league office on Wednesday, May 21. Wright is the first Hoosier to earn the award for rowing.
"Freshman of the year is a great honor and well deserved for Alice," said head coach Steve Peterson. "She has been a 'quiet' leader for the Varsity 8 this whole spring. It is amazing that a freshman can walk in and take over stroking a Varsity 8, but to do it at this level is even more impressive. I can't think of a better and more deserving person to receive Indiana's first individual Big Ten honor in our sport. I am just so excited for her and to see how much further she can develop over the remainder of her career here at Indiana."
Wright has helped Indiana record its best season in program history and earn its first trip to the NCAA Championships. The Wellington, New Zealand native sat in the stroke seat in Indiana's First Varsity 8 boat that medaled at the Big Ten Championships last weekend for the first time in program history. The boat posted a third-place effort to help the Hoosiers claim their highest team finish at the event. The newcomer was named a Second Team All-Big Ten selection.
Indiana will open the 2014 NCAA Championships on Friday, May 30 at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis.
