BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana Rowing coach staff has been named Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Central Region Staff of the Year, announced by the association on Monday, June 2.

"This is a great honor for the coaching staff," said head coach Steve Peterson. "This past summer we went through a complete change in our staff. We brought in Sheila Rinozzi and Kate Sweeney as assistant coaches, Stefan Evano filled the newly developed role of Director of Equipment and Operations, and Bonnie Chilibeck joined as the volunteer coach. In our first year with this young staff - none had ever been full time collegiate coaches before, and with an incredibly young team on hand, they were able to help guide IU Rowing to its best season ever, winning medals at the Big Ten Championships, earning an NCAA berth and we will finish season ranked 11th in the nation - the highest ever for our program."

The Hoosiers' staff led Indiana to its first NCAA Championships berth where IU finished 11th overall. Indiana spent most the season ranked No. 13 in the CRCA/USRowing Coaches poll. The Hoosiers finished fourth at the Big Ten Championships, the program's best finish at the championships. Indiana's Meradith Dickensheets was named First Team All-Big Ten, while Alice Wright and Karly Kikkert were named Second Team All-Big Ten. Wright was also honored as Big Ten Freshman of the Year, the program's first individual league honor.

"All of this success did not happen by accident," Peterson said. "It happened because of the enthusiasm and dedication this staff put into the program and the results speak for themselves. This has been an amazing year because everyone on our staff is committed to getting the most out of each and every member of the team, both on and off the water."

"I have been asked by many people what the secret to our success has been this year," Peterson added. "It has been a number of different things, but one of the biggest has been our staff. It has been a complete team effort. Like the athletes on this team, they all know that the success or failure of this team depends upon everyone fulfilling their job to the best of their ability. Lucky for me, and the Indiana Rowing program, we have one of the top coaching staffs in the country working with us."

Peterson is now eligible for CRCA Division I Coach of the Year and the staff is eligible for Division I Staff of the Year, which will be announced on June 9.
