Indiana Wins Season Opener 2-0 Over Wright State
Aug. 21, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's soccer team got the 2009 season started off on the right track with a 2-0 win over Wright State at Armstrong Stadium on Friday night. The Hoosiers got an own goal from Wright State as well as a tally from junior Leigh Anne Cummings in the victory while sophomore Lindsay Campbell earned her fifth career shutout in goal.
"On Leigh Anne's goal, we got a great cross and great second pass to Leigh and she finished exactly how she is supposed to on the back post," said Indiana head coach Mick Lyon. "And overall, I thought that we were much more fluid tonight than we were in the exhibition match and we were able to get out to a very strong start, although we didn't get any goals out it."
Just like they did in the exhibition match, Indiana outshot its opponent by a wide margin, this time it was 14-5 in favor of the Hoosiers while corner kicks were even at five apiece.
Just seven minutes into the second half the Hoosiers struck again on a pair of perfectly timed passes to increase the lead to 2-0. Samp had the ball on the right side of the box and sent a pass across the middle that was flicked on to the back post by Christie Kotynski and put home by Cummings for her sixth career goal and first of the season.
The fast start Lyon was referring to for the Hoosiers (1-0-0) included a shot just wide by senior Christie Kotynski less than three minutes in followed by a hard shot on goal from the right side of the box by freshman Ciersten Burks 30 seconds later.
Freshman Hannah Davidson got into the act in the 14th minute with a shot from the front of the goal off a corner kick that just sailed high over the goal. Then in the 24th minute sophomore Carly Samp hit a post with a shot from the right side to continue the assault on the Wright State (0-1-0) goal.
The first goal of the season would end up coming off the foot of a Wright State defender as Burks sent a centering pass into the middle and it was kicked into the goal on a clearing attempt to give IU a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute.
Indiana will be back on Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium on Friday, Aug. 28 for a game against Evansville starting at 7:30 p.m. Once again, fans will be able to watch the match via streaming video on IUHoosiers.com.
