BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University Women's Soccer team opened the 2014 season with a 2-0 win over Indiana State at Bill Armstrong Stadium on Friday night. Junior Jessie Bujouves scored both goals for the Hoosiers while redshirt junior Sarah Stone posted her fourth career shutout in goal.

"I think the key for us tonight was to be patient and to settle down a little bit," Indiana head coach Amy Berbary said. Just like in the exhibition game, it was a tale of two halves for us tonight. We always tell our players that we want to be either tied or ahead at halftime and we were up 1-0 tonight. We know that we need to continue to work in the final third of the field to finish our chances."

For the game, Indiana (1-0) controlled the pace of play and outshot the Sycamores by a 19-8 margin, with nine of those shots coming on goal for the Hoosiers.

The Hoosiers were on the attack from the start and found the back of the goal in the 10th minute. Freshman Kayla Smith sent a ball into the middle of the box, where Jordan Woolums deflected it back to Bujvoues. The Ontario, Canada, native drilled it with her right foot into the back of the net for the goal.

In the second half, Indiana put pressure on the Indiana State (0-1) goal and their persistence finally paid off. Bekah White beat her defender inside the box and as she approached the next one, she was taken down and Indiana was awarded a penalty kick. Bujouves stepped up and promptly gave the Hoosiers a 2-0 advantage.

But Stone was forced to make a couple tremendous saves in goal to earn the shutout, including one where the ISU attacker shot it from close range and Stone deflected it up into the air and then caught it before it could cross the goal line.

A total of five freshmen saw their first collegiate action in the game, with two of them making the starting lineup - Kayla Smith and Taylor Coley. Providing a boost off the bench were Mykayla Brown, Nickie Zuckerman and Annelie Leitner. Sophomore Molly Pittman, who joined the Hoosiers over the summer after playing her freshman year at Samford, was also in the starting lineup for Indiana.

Indiana will travel to Eastern Michigan for a Sunday afternoon game at 1 p.m. to wrap up the opening weekend.
