Indiana Cruises To 6-0 Win at Butler
Aug. 29, 2010
INDIANAPOLIS - Devon Beach registered her first career two-goal game and Orianica Velasquez had a goal and an assist as Indiana (2-1-0) had little trouble on its way to a 6-0 win at the Butler Bowl against the Butler Bulldogs (0-4-0) on Sunday afternoon. The six goal margin of victory was the biggest for IU since a 9-0 win against IUPUI on Sept. 6, 1998.
"We scored some nice goals today," Indiana head coach Mick Lyon said. "Our offense was obviously locked in but our defense handled all the counter attacks by Butler today, led by central defender Kerri Krawczak. And Lauren Hollandsworth made a tremendous save on a shot from distance to keep the momentum on our side in the first half."
Indiana got on the board first thanks to a nifty finish from sophomore forward Orianica Velasquez. The Bogota, Colombia, native received a tremendous pass over the top of the defense from Chloe McKay and chipped a clever shot over the BU keeper from 30 yards out for the goal, her second of the season.
The teams went to the locker room with the Hoosiers up 1-0 and holding a 6-4 edge in shots. But that would all change early in the second half.
"We told the team after Friday's loss that if we are going to outshoot teams," Lyon said, "we need to get the shots on the frame and not right at the keeper or over the goal. Today we did that and you could see the difference in the result."
Just less than three minutes into the second stanza, Beach made a perfect run through the middle and Velasquez found her perfectly. Once she gathered the pass, she showed some patience to let the BU keeper come out and easily slid it by the diving Olivia Walton to increase the IU lead to 2-0 on her first goal of the season.
The Hoosiers continued the onslaught in the 59th minute when another outstanding run by Beach resulted in her being pulled down in the box by Walton. The BU keeper was issued a red card and Indiana was awarded a penalty shot. Junior Carly Samp stepped up and buried it in the goal, her second of the season, and Indiana had a commanding 3-0 lead.
The fourth goal started when Jocelyn Moses got behind the defense and took the ball all the way to the endline before she passed it back to freshman Kristin Leist, who one-touched it on to the waiting foot of senior Darby Hannon who put home just her second career goal.
With less than ten minutes remaining, Beach got the ball roughly 30 yards out and was swarmed by a number of Butler players. The junior from Sarnia, Ontario, took all of them on and fired a shot from 20 yards out that found the back of the net for her second goal of the day and the season.
Just two minutes after Beach's long shot found paydirt, freshman Lara Ross powered one in over the keeper from 25 yards away for her first collegiate goal and capped off a dominating 6-0 win.
The six goals is just the fourth time IU has scored six or more goals in a game in program history:
After starting the season with three consecutive road games, the Hoosiers will get very comfortable at Armstrong Stadium over the next month. All eight games on the schedule in the month of September are at home, starting Wednesday against Western Michigan at 7:30 p.m.
