Hoosiers Score OT Victory Over Jacksonville
Sept. 2, 2007
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Indiana women's soccer team earned its first win of the 2007 with a dramatic, 4-3 victory over Jacksonville in the second overtime period. Christie Kotynski posted the game-winner for the Hoosiers (1-1) at the 102:44 mark off a brilliant cross from Suzie Teixeira.
"This was a strong victory for our team," head coach Mick Lyon said. "We came out a little sluggish for the opening 30 minutes, but for the remainder of the game we really played brilliant soccer. Several players really stepped up their play today and [senior midfielder] Beverly Markwort had a career weekend for us."
Sophomores Natalie O'Bryan and Kelly Lawrence and freshman Chloe McKay each had their first career goals for the Hoosiers in the contest, as IU peppered JU with 35 shots. Lorna Brownlie made eight saves in a losing effort, while freshman Lauren Hollandsworth played the final 57:44 and made one save to collect the win for Indiana.
O'Bryan got the Hoosiers on the board at the 2:45 mark off a poor clearance by the Dolphins and the sophomore took full advantage with the first points of her career. JU got the game's next two goals, with Elizabeth Fink and Keri Zwikker posting a pair of tallies over a 12-minute span to give the home squad a 2-1 lead at the 22:34 mark.
From then on, the Hoosiers swarmed the Dolphin goal, and aggressiveness in the offensive end led to Indiana tying the contest at 2-2. Chloe McKay took advantage of an errant Dolphin pass and put a shot past Brownlie for a goal in just her second collegiate game.
After entering the second half tied with the Hoosiers at two, Jacksonville regained the lead with a brilliant goal at the 60:20 mark by Zwikker. The junior picked up her second goal of the game on a blast to the top corner to make it 3-2. Sian Senior and Tamara Cormier collected assists on the play.
Lawrence got the equalizer in the 81st minute, knotting the game at 3-3. Kotynski sent in a cross and the defender put the ball past Brownlie on a header at the 80:59 mark to send the game into overtime. In the second OT period, Kotynski picked up her first goal of the season off an assist from Teixeira to give the Hoosiers the win. It was Kotynski's second career game-winner.
The OT victory was the first Hoosier extra-session triumph since a 3-2 overtime win over Iowa on Oct. 23, 2005. Indiana put 12 shots on net in the game, led by McKay's four. The freshman led IU with seven overall shots as well.
The Hoosiers are back in action for the Hoosier Classic next weekend. Southern California takes on Maryland Friday afternoon before the Hoosiers host Loyola Marymount at 7 p.m.
