Hoosiers Surge To 3-1 Win Against Indiana State
Sept. 12, 2012
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana Women's Soccer team wrapped up non-conference play with a 3-1 victory over Indiana State on Wednesday night at Armstrong Stadium. They have a 5-2-1 record as they begin Big Ten play on Saturday at Michigan.
On Wednesday night it was a first half of total domination by the Hoosiers but they went to the locker room with only a 1-0 lead thanks to Lisa Nouanesengsy's sixth goal of the season. Rebecca Candler beat her defender to the end line and her centering pass was true, finding Nouanesengsy's foot for the goal and her fifth assist of the year. Indiana out-shot ISU (3-4-1) by a 13-1 margin in the first half.
The Sycamores came out firing to start the second half and evened the score on a goal by Aubrie Musselman in the 47th minute. The teams traded attacks over the middle portion of the second half before Jessie Bujouves broke through for Indiana, finding a loose ball in front and putting home her first collegiate goal to give IU the 2-1 lead in the 77th minute. Candler once again was in the middle of it, getting off two shots at point-blank range before Bujouves cleaned things up with the goal.
To ice the game away in the 89th minute, Orianica Velasquez was pulled down from behind right in front of the six-yard box and was awarded a penalty kick. She regained her composure after the foul and blasted a shot with her left foot past the diving ISU keeper, making the score 3-1 in favor of the Hoosiers.
Shannon Flower faced just five shots all night and made one save to pick up the win in goal for IU.
The Hoosiers open Big Ten play on Saturday at Michigan with a 7:00 p.m. ET kickoff.
