Velasquez Herrera's Late Goal Lifts No. 22 Indiana past Butler
Sept. 16, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Freshman Orianica Velasquez Herrera's goal in the 79th minute lifted the Indiana women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Butler on Wednesday night. The 22nd-ranked Hoosiers held a significant edge in play throughout the match as they improved to 7-1-0 on the year.
Though Indiana controlled the play for much of the match, Butler was able to keep the Hoosiers off the scoreboard until the waning minutes. Keeper Jessica Schein made five saves, two of which were stellar efforts, and the Bulldogs also got some help from the post, as Carly Samp's grade-A opportunity glanced off the far post and trickled harmlessly out of bounds.
In the 79th minute, the offensive pressure finally cracked the scoreboard. In a scramble inside the 18-yard box, the ball found its way to the feet of Liz Holby, who shot from 10 yards but was denied by Schein. The rebound, though, caromed toward the left post and Velasquez Herrera was able to blast it home from point-blank range for her second goal of the year to give the Hoosiers a 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs mounted a strong effort in the final 10 minutes, but Indiana was able to withstand a final flurry, as Butler's best opportunity of the night sailed just over the crossbar off the head of Katie Griswold with less than a minute to play.
Indiana is back in action on Friday night for its final non-conference affair of the season. The Hoosiers play host to Green Bay at 7:30 p.m. at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Admission is free to all women's soccer home matches in the 2009 season.
