BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Meghan Gill scored the lone goal in the 40th minute for No. 22 Penn State, as the Nittany Lions (6-4-0, 1-0-0 Big Ten) knocked off Indiana 1-0 on Yeagley Field on Friday in the conference opener for both teams. Lindsay Campbell made four saves in a losing effort for the Hoosiers (5-5-0, 0-1-0).

After the two teams played a hard-fought, scoreless contest for the first 39 minutes, Penn State got a fortunate goal on a strong effort from Gill in the box. Off a scramble, a spinning ball fell to the feet of the redshirt freshman. Gill got a piece of the bounding ball and it spun just inside the right post for her first goal of the season to make it 1-0 at 39:34.

In the second half, IU turned up the heat and had a number of strong chances in the offensive end. Perhaps the best opportunity came on a strong serve from Kelly Lawrence along the right sideline that sailed toward the back post. Taylor Fallon streaked in and got off a point-blank shot, but keeper Krissy Tribbet made the save to keep PSU up 1-0.

Penn State nearly made it 2-0 late in the second half, but Campbell came through with a lovely play in net. Melissa Hayes sent in a corner from the far side toward the top of the six, but Campbell came off the back line and punched the ball out to safety. Another Nittany Lion melee in the box resulted in a ball off the crossbar that the Hoosiers were able to clear.

Penn State ended the game with a 17-9 shot advantage, thanks in part to tallying the final five shots of the contest. PSU had eight fouls to Indiana's five in the game, and the lone yellow card came in the 76th minute. Devon Beach was cautioned when she made an aggressive run toward a softly bouncing ball and collided with Tribbet just after the keeper had secured possession.

Next up for the Hoosiers will be another crucial conference contest, as IU plays host to Ohio State on Sunday at 2 p.m. The game will be the Hoosiers' 2008 debut on the Big Ten Network. Chris Doran (play-by-play) and Lisa Grubb (analyst) will have the call of the game.
