BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
The Indiana Women's Soccer team held a 1-0 lead with just over 10 minutes left in Friday's game against Illinois, but the Fighting Illini (6-4-1, 3-1 Big Ten) scored twice in the closing minutes to hand the Hoosiers (5-6-1, 0-4 Big Ten) a 2-1 at Armstrong Stadium.
Orianica Velasquez scored her 22nd career goal for the Hoosiers in the 56th minute to put Indiana ahead 1-0 against Illinios. Velasquez took a pass at the top of the box from Rebecca Candler and fired a shot directly over the head of the Illinois goalkeeper before she could get her hands up to make the stop. For Candler, it was her team-leading sixth assist of the season.
Candler's six assists are tied for ninth on the single-season list at Indiana, just two off the single-season record.
Illinois tied the game in the 80th minute on a header by Amy Feher off a long cross from the left side. Less than a minute after the Illini tied the game, Candler was put in on goal behind the Illinois defenders with a chance to put the Hoosiers back on top but the UI keeper Steph Panozzo was up to the task and made the save.
Five minutes later Allie Osoba tallied the game-winner on a loose ball in the box. The Hoosiers furiously tried to mount a comeback in the closing seconds, including a shot from long range by Velasquez that hit the cross bar and the rebound shot was blocked by an Illinois defender.
The Hoosiers will host Northwestern on Sunday afternoon at 1pm, where it will be "Bark in the Park" and fans are encouraged to bring their dogs with them to the game. Admission is free.
