Hoosiers Battle Michigan to 1-1 Draw
Oct. 4, 2007
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Indiana women's soccer team ran its unbeaten streak to 10 games with a 1-1 tie against Michigan on Thursday. The Hoosiers got a first-half goal from Lindsay McCarthy to improve to 8-1-2 (2-0-1 Big Ten).
The Hoosiers got on the board with a goal at the 24:01 with McCarthy's second goal of the season. After Chloe McKay's shot was blocked from 30 yards out, the ball came to McCarthy. The senior snuck free of her defender, turned around and ripped a shot high to the left side that cleared Michigan keeper Madison Gates to put IU up 1-0.
Michigan knotted the score at 52:12 off a wild sequence on a corner. The ball was sent in by Danielle Underwood, and Lindsey Cottrell was able to put a head on the ball. After the initial shot went off a defender, the ball came to the feet of Sarah Banco, who smashed it home to knot the score at 1-1. Neither team was able to crack the scoreboard for the remainder of regulation, and the teams went to extra time.
Indiana had a strong opportunity at the beginning of the first OT, but Kristin Arnold's free kick from the top of the box went high of the net. Lauren Hollandsworth made a pair of strong plays, coming out of her net to deny a UM attacker on two separate occasions.
U-M's leading scorer, Amanda Bowery had two strong chances in the opening minutes of the second OT, but her first shot went wide and the second sailed just high of the net. Neither side was able to generate any chances after that, though, and each team took a point.
The Hoosiers are back in action on Sunday when they take on Michigan State in East Lansing. Game time is slated for noon EDT.
