Hoosiers Run Unbeaten Streak to 12 with 4-2 Win
Oct. 12, 2007
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to 12 games and remained undefeated in Big Ten play with a 4-2 win over Minnesota on Friday. Kristin Arnold scored a pair of goals in the win for the Hoosiers, while Jocelyn Moses and Leigh Anne Cummings had solo tallies. The Hoosiers (10-1-2, 4-0-1 Big Ten) reached double-digit wins for the first time since 2002 with the victory.
The Hoosiers got on the board at 6:53 with Arnold netting her seventh goal of the year. Chloe McKay fed the ball to the sophomore just outside the near corner of the box. Arnold spun and sent a right-footed shot high to the right corner and over keeper Chelsey Turner to make the score 1-0 in favor of the home squad. McKay picked up her team-leading sixth assist on the score.
IU extended its lead at 43:26 when Moses converted a free kick by Jessica Boots. From 40 yards out, Boots sent a long, high ball toward the far post, and Moses tapped it into the net from four yards out for her first career goal. The assist was Boots' second of the season.
Goalkeeper Lauren Hollandsworth did her part in the half as well, making three saves in the frame. Her first was the best, as she made a diving stop to her left on a great chance by the Gophers' Katie Bethke in the ninth minute.
The Hoosiers upped the lead to 3-0 when Cummings converted her fourth goal at 54:28. Off a beautiful through ball from Lindsay McCarthy, Cummings brought it into the left side of the box and smashed home a shot from 10 yards.
Arnold added her second goal of the contest just 48 seconds later. A Minnesota foul gave the Hoosiers a free kick on the near side from 35 yards out, and Arnold stepped to the ball. The sophomore blasted a bending shot over the wall to the top right corner and into the back of the net for her third multi-goal contest of the year.
Minnesota erased the shutout with 26:50 to play when an IU foul in the box led to a penalty kick for the Gophers. Kylie Kallman took the shot and nailed it into the center of the net as Hollandsworth dived to the left, as Kallman notched her first tally of the season. Elena Fruci trimmed the lead to 4-2 with a rebound goal off a Katie Bethke shot at 72:09.
Indiana is back in action on Sunday, when it plays host to Iowa at 2 p.m. EDT at Armstrong Stadium. The game will be the final Big Ten contest on Yeagley Field for the 2007 season.
