WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -
The Indiana Hoosiers were able to put a pair of goals on the board at the Varsity Soccer Complex against Purdue but the Boilermakers scored eight goals to provide the final score of 8-2. Devon Beach scored in the second half off a corner kick and Orianica Velasquez put home a penalty kick.
The Hoosiers (6-8-1, 2-5 Big Ten) had the game's first good scoring chance as Orianica Velasquez found Becca Candler with a cross at the back post but Candler's shot sailed high over the crossbar.
From there, Purdue took control for the remainder of the half. The scored goals in the 27th, 30th, 32nd and 38th minute to take a 4-0 lead into the locker room.
The Boilers added two more goals early in the second half to take a 6-0 lead on the Hoosiers in the driving rain that started immediately after PU scored their first goal of the game.
In the 68th minute, Velasquez sent a corner kick in to defender Becca Zambon in the middle of the field. Zambon took a touch and then lofted a shot to the back post where Beach was waiting and she beat the PU keeper inside the back post for her second goal of the season.
Then in the 86th minute, Monica Melink was pulled down from behind while trying to get to a ball in the box and the Hoosiers were awarded a penalty kick. Velasquez stepped up and drilled a shot into the lower third for her team-leading seventh goal of the season. She is now 4-for-4 in her career on penalty kicks.
Purdue continued to attack until the end and added a pair of goals to round out the scoring at 8-2.
Despite the lopsided score, Purdue's advantage in shots was just 19-13 but shots on goal were 13-5 in favor of the Boilers.
Indiana will take the pitch next on Sunday, Oct. 16, at 1:00 p.m. against the Michigan State Spartans. It will be senior day at Armstrong Stadium where the six IU seniors will be recognized.
