Hoosiers Edged in Overtime by OSU, 2-1
Nov. 8, 2007
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Indiana women's soccer team was trumped in heartbreaking fashion by Ohio State in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament, 2-1 in overtime. Ashley Bowyer scored the game winner for the Buckeyes (12-8-0) in the 98th minute, while Lindsay McCarthy scored the lone goal for the Hoosiers (12-6-2).
The Buckeyes netted the game-winner at 97:07 in the first overtime. Lara Dickenmann sent a cross off the line to the six-yard box, where Lauren Hollandsworth jumped and punched it toward the near post. There, Bowyer sprinted in and tucked the ball just inside the post from point-blank range to advance OSU to the second round.
McCarthy put the Hoosiers on the board in the 54th minute off a corner. Kristin Arnold sent the ball toward the near post, where it grazed the head of a defender and deep into the box. McCarthy then put a foot on the ball into the corner of the net to give IU a 1-0 edge for her fifth goal of the season.
But Ohio State came right back and tied the game in the 57th on a nice ball by freshman Courtney Jenkins. From 25 yards out, Jenkins found some spaced and bent a left-footed shot just out of the reach of Hollandsworth into the lower right corner. The goal was Jenkins' fourth of the season.
The Buckeyes nearly took a 2-1 lead in the 63rd minute off a corner. The ball was served perfectly to Keiana Mitchell at the near post, and the senior sent a header labeled for the near side of the net. But senior Beverly Markwort made a brilliant jumping header to keep the score tied 1-1.
The Hoosiers had two great chances in the first overtime, the first coming off the foot of Chloe McKay. The freshman found some space inside the box and sent a lefty shot just high and wide to the left. Later, Jocelyn Moses worked to find space inside the six and sent a ball just wide to the right of the far side post.
The first half was an even-fought battle with OSU holding an 8-6 edge in shots. Hollandsworth made a brilliant play in the 20th minute to keep the Buckeyes off the scoreboard. Dickenmann sent a through ball to a streaking Laura Roberts. Roberts tried to go around the All-Freshman keeper, but Hollandsworth dived and took the ball off Roberts' feet.
In the 30th, Katy Stewart nearly put the Hoosiers ahead but for a brilliant play by Carla Arbulu. Jessica Boots beat her defender along the end line and sent a ball to Stewart 10 yards from goal. The senior slammed a right-footed shot toward the upper right corner, but Arbulu headed it off the line and out of danger.
The Hoosiers will seek an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, as the selection committee will announce the field of 64 on Monday, Nov. 12. The selection show will be televised on ESPNEWS at 8 p.m. EST. The Hoosiers were ranked 18th in the final release of the Ratings Percentage Index on Monday, Nov. 5.
