Arnold's Golden Goal Sends Hoosiers to Second Round
Nov. 16, 2007
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Kristin Arnold netted a golden goal in the 108th minute to lift the Indiana women's soccer team to a 3-2 overtime victory over Toledo in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The Hoosiers (13-6-2) will take on Purdue in the second round, as they posted their first Tournament win since 1998.
Lindsay McCarthy set up the game winner with a flick to the front of the goal that Arnold headed over keeper Andrea Plewes for her 10th goal of the season. McCarthy started the play with a cross that was returned to her after Christie Kotynski's attempted shot was deflected away. The senior then put her right foot on a ball to send it to the front and Arnold was able to put it home to garner sole possession of fourth place on IU's single-season goals list.
That thwarted a strong effort from Toledo, as the Rockets fought back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game with a pair of goals in the final 15 minutes of regulation. The Rockets got on the board at 75:06 with Molly Cornwell converting her 15th goal of the season. Fighting for the ball on the far side, Ali Leak sent a high cross into the six, where Cornwell headed it home past keeper Lauren Hollandsworth to bring the game within one.
Toledo tied the game with 5:04 to play in regulation off a free kick. Cornwell's cross went deep into the box, where Christie Kotynski cleared it out of danger, but Suzi Siwinski followed up and blasted a shot into the upper left corner for her first goal of the season.
The first half was all Hoosiers, as IU scored a pair of tallies to take a 2-0 lead into the break. Katy Stewart put the Hoosiers on the board at 9:01 of the first half with her first goal of the season. Taylor Fallon took a throw in on the near side and found Jessica Boots in the near corner. The sophomore sent a left-footed cross to the goal mouth and Stewart headed the ball past the keeper to the near side for her first tally of the season. Boots and Fallon were each credited with an assist on the play.
Jocelyn Moses made it 2-0 with 5:49 to play before halftime off a brilliant setup by Arnold. Off a pass from Natalie O'Bryan, Arnold sped to the backline and cut toward the net. The sophomore then sent a low ball to the middle of the six and Moses put a foot on it while sliding in to direct the ball inside the near post for her second goal of the season.
Indiana had a strong opportunity to increase its lead in the 68th minute, with Moses sending a low cross to McCarthy 15 yards out. But the senior's shot was saved by UT's Andrea Plewes, and Arnold was unable to put the rebound on goal, sending a shot just high of the crossbar.
The Hoosiers return to the second round of the tournament for the first time since 1998. IU will face the OU/PU winner on Sunday at 1 p.m. EST in West Lafayette.
