Lawrence Named to England U-20 Squad
Feb. 4, 2008
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana defender Kelly Lawrence has been named to England's Under-20 squad at the Four Nations Tournament from Feb. 11-15. The tournament will be held in La Serena, Chile, and will pit England against the United States, Chile and Norway in a trio of matches.
The event will be a precursor to the FIFA Women's U-20 World Cup, which will be held in Chile in November. Lawrence is the only member of the 18-player squad that plays soccer in the United States.
Following the 2007 season, Lawrence was selected All-Great Lakes Region by both the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and by Soccer Buzz. She also became the first Hoosier defender in school history to pick up first team All-Big Ten laurels. She is just the second defender to have garnered all-conference honors twice in her career, joining Azure Johnson (1995, 1996) in that category. Lawrence and Emily Hotz (2000, 2001) are the only two Hoosiers to have picked up conference recognition in their freshman and sophomore campaigns.
Lawrence has emerged as one of the top 1-v-1 defenders in the conference and also finished with one goal and one assist on the season. In 2006, she was also a unanimous selection to the Big Ten's All-Freshman Team. During the summer of 2007, Lawrence also helped the England U-19 team to a runner-up finish at the 2007 U-19 UEFA Cup in Reykjavik, Iceland.
Indiana was ranked 21st in the final NSCAA poll of the 2007 season. The Hoosiers finished the season 13-7-3, including a trip to the third round of the NCAA Tournament, the furthest the Hoosiers had ever gone in the postseason.
