Signee Profile - Devon Beach
Feb. 11, 2008
Over the next several weeks, IUHoosiers.com will be bringing you profiles of the players that signed with the Indiana women's soccer team in early February. The profile for Monday, Feb. 11, is of Sarnia, Ontario, product Devon Beach.
Devon Beach joins the Hoosiers after a successful career while playing for high school, club and provincial teams in her native Canada. The 5-foot-8 midfielder/forward was one of the top goal scorers for each of her teams and is expected to bring a strong scoring presence to the Hoosiers.
"Devon Beach is continuing the trend of bringing incredible international talent to Indiana University and the IU Women's Soccer program," head coach Mick Lyon said. "We are such a global University that it only makes sense to make the women's soccer program a microcosm of the school. Foreign players bring a flavor of skill and talent that is different from U.S. players and for me as the coach I think it makes us stronger as a squad."
Beach played three years for Northern Collegiate Institute and Vocational School, and was the team's top goal scorer in each of the three seasons. She led the school to the South Western Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Association Championship in both the 2005-06 and 2006-07 school years. She was a two-sport athlete for the school as well, as she was named the team MVP for the junior girls' basketball team and picked up Junior Girls Athlete of the Year honors in 2005-06.
Additionally, Beach played her club soccer for the London Supernova in London, Ontario. Under head coach Geoff Painter, she helped the team to the 2007 Women's Ontario Cup last season. In 2006, Supernova went one step further, taking home the national championship. That followed a 2005 season during which Beach was the leading goal scorer, captain and MVP for an Under-15 squad that was an Ontario Youth League semi-finalist.
Beach has attended the Ontario National Training Center since 2005, and attended the Canadian National Training Camp in both 2005 and 2006. She has played for Team Ontario each of the last three years, helping the team to a national championship in both 2006 and 2007.
"Watching Devon play in both training sessions and competitive games has always kept me on the edge of my seat when she is involved in the play," Lyon said. "She has smooth, silky skill matched with a very tough competitive attitude and her natural flair for the game makes her quite the special package. I have no doubt that the IU soccer fans are going to enjoy her attacking skills, her teammates will enjoy her work ethic and crafty skill to create scoring chances and the opposition - they are going to be picking the ball out of the back of the net!"
Beach has one brother, Corbin, and is undecided in regards to her major at IU. The daughter of Susan and Nigel Beach was born on June 30, 1990.
