HOOSIERS TOP MICHIGAN 2-1
March 28, 2000 HOOSIERS TOP MICHIGAN 2-1
Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Indiana women's soccer team scored a 2-1 victory in its spring opener against Michigan Sunday. Freshmen Jessie Rabin and Kristen Sprunger scored the IU goals as the Hoosiers rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit.
"This is a really big win for us," said IU head coach Joe Kelley. "That is basically the same Michigan team that beat us 3-0 in the fall and won the Big Ten Tournament."
The Hoosiers scored both goals in the second half despite going into a 15 mph wind and facing the sun. Sprunger tied the game at one with her goal in the 55th minute. Rabin scored 13 minutes later to give Indiana the final 2-1 advantage.
"We were tough out there," said Kelley. "We have really matured. You can see it in their competitiveness. We were down 1-0 at the break and came out with a purpose in the second half."
The Indiana rally began on the defensive end as the Hoosiers stymied the Wolverine attack after the break. IU sophomore Whitney Butler played her first game since transferring from Connecticut at the semester break, and freshman Megan Veith saw her first action in net for the Hoosiers.
"We had outstanding team defense," Kelley said. "The whole team did well. This team has trained so hard since November. This is really rewarding."
