CARMEL, Ind.—The Indiana women’s soccer team had a perfect ending to its spring season as they defeated the defending national champions, the North Carolina Tarheels, 1-0 on Saturday evening at the Brian Murray Stadium at Carmel High School in front of a crowd of 3,000 fans. The lone goal of the game came from junior midfielder Kim Grodek just five minutes after she entered the game.

“It was absolutely stupendous,” said head coach Mick Lyon. “It wasn’t in the traditional season, but beating UNC at any time of the year is very special. They don’t lose to many teams at any point, so it was a great accomplishment for our girls.”

Grodek came off the bench to score the game’s only goal off a rebound. Grodek, an all-Great Lakes Region player last fall when IU went 8-10-1, was in her first action of the spring after coming off knee surgery.

“In our sport, North Carolina has a national following, so I expected that some of the fans might be pulling for them,” Lyon said. “But all the fans were cheering for IU. It was really sweet for the girls.”
