Women's Soccer Announces 2009 Schedule
May 25, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's soccer team will play 11 home matches during the 2009 season, head coach Mick Lyon announced today. The Hoosiers open the season with four straight home contests, including one against national power Florida, in addition to five Big Ten home matches.
"The 2009 schedule of home games should give the Hoosier fans plenty of opportunity to watch the girls play this season," Lyon said. "The Florida game will be a cracker, with the seniors looking for revenge from the 2007 result in Gainesville.
"But the meat of the season will be Big Ten games again this year and without a season-ending tournament, it will mean every point in Big Ten play will be significant," he continued. "Having four ranked Big Ten teams at home makes Yeagley Field an exciting venue for college soccer this fall."
Indiana opens the year with an exhibition contest at Armstrong Stadium against in-state foe Valparaiso on August 18. Just three days later the Hoosiers will host their season opener, with Wright State coming to town for a 7:30 p.m. contest on August 21. The following weekend, IU will play host to Evansville and Central Michigan in Bloomington.
On September 4, the Hoosiers will take on SEC foe Florida, as the Gators return the trip that Indiana made to Gainesville in 2007. The Hoosiers fell in a tight, 1-0 contest in that game to open their season that ended with a trip to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. After hosting the Gators, IU has three straight road games, at Mercer, Hoftstra and St. John's.
The Hoosiers return home for their final two non-conference games, as they play host to Butler and Green Bay on September 16 and 18 on Yeagley Field. After that, Indiana opens the conference season with a road weekend at Northwestern and Wisconsin on September 25 and 27, respectively.
Five of the next six games for Indiana will be played at Armstrong Stadium, with home contests against Michigan State, Illinois, Purdue, Iowa and Penn State. In the middle of that is a road contest at Michigan on October 18. The Hoosiers will wrap up the season with games at Ohio State (November 1) and Minnesota (November 6).
IU returns all 11 starters from the 2008 squad. The Hoosiers lost just 100 minutes of game action from last year's team. Indiana finished 8-10-1 with a 3-6-1 record in conference action.
