BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
Over the next couple weeks, IUHoosiers.com will be taking a more in-depth look at the newcomers to the IU Women's Soccer program for the 2010 season. Today is the first of six editions where we take a look at each of the newcomers to the IUWS program. Today, we feature Kristin Leist (Mason, Ohio/William Mason) and Becca Zambon (Carlsbad, Calif.,/Carlsbad).
William Mason High School
Leist joins the Hoosiers from William Mason High School and head coach Andy Schur. She suffered a season-ending knee injury early in her senior season, but had gotten off to a fast start with four goals and three assists through the first five games. As a junior she led the team with eight assists after pacing the team with 10 goals as a sophomore. Twice she as named first team all-conference and led the team to a pair of conference championships. Her high school team defeated the No. 1 team in the country on two separate occasions in her career as well. As a sophomore, Leist scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Sycamore High School.
A member of the ODP state team for three years, she was also a participant at the USL Super Y Regional and National teams in 2007 and 2008. As a member of the Ohio Elite Soccer Academy, she claimed one state title and a pair of finals appearances as well as appearances in the USYSA Region II Tournament. In five years with OESA, Leist scored 71 goals and added 46 assists.
The daughter of Scott and Pam Leist, she plans to major in Education upon enrolling at Indiana.
Coach Lyon on Leist
"Kristin is going to really give the team some added size and speed in the attacking area. Her ability to blow by defenders or to quickly close players down and steal the ball makes her dangerous as a forward and wing midfielder. A tough knee injury slowed her down for the winter and spring but she is so athletic that I see her making up for lost time very quickly. Like a number of the players in this class, she attended our camps so we have seen her play a number of times."
Carlsbad High School
Zambon played four years at Carlsbad High School for head coach Carl Higham and had an extremely decorated career. As a senior, she tallied 16 goals and handed out seven assists on her way to being named the team's offensive player of the year and collecting her fourth straight all-league selection. Zambon was named to the North County Times
All-North County Team twice, with the first coming after her 23 goal season as a sophomore. She was named the team's offensive player of the year as a junior as well as team MVP as a sophomore.
Playing for the San Diego Surf club team, she was named team captain in 2009 and earned co-MVP honors following her senior campaign. Zambon led the Surf to Surf Cup titles in 2007 and 2008 and a Surf College Cup finals appearance in 2009. She has also been a part of the Cal-South ODP team for three years, earning the Region IV ODP championship in 2008. Zambon is a two-time San Diego Union Tribune All-Academic Team and received the Carlsbad High School Scholar-Athlete Achievement Award all four years.
The daughter of Pete and Regina Zambon, she plans to major in Sports Management with minors in Spanish and Coaching.
Coach Lyon on Zambon
"Zambon will bring some great Southern Californian qualities to the game, as she is both a tremendous attacking player and also one who can race back and defend with toughness. I expect her to make an impact all over the pitch as she develops into a great IUWS player. Becca also has the "goal scorer's" touch which is always a plus."
