BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
Over the next couple weeks, IUHoosiers.com will be taking a more in-depth look at the newcomers to the IU Women's Soccer program for the 2010 season. Today is the fourth of six editions and we will take a look at Bekah White (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) and Kate McCusker (Valparaiso, Ind./Shattuck-St. Mary's [Minn.]).
Overland Park, Kan.
Blue Valley Northwest High School
White is a four-year letterwinner for head coach Dr. Rick Pribyl at Blue Valley Northwest High School. This past season, she led the Jaguars to an appearance in the state title game and assisted on the final goal in a 3-0 win in the semifinals. She received First Team All-Eastern Kansas League and second team all-state as a senior.
With her club team, Blue Valley Soccer Club (BVSC), White won six state championships and was a three-time regional semifinalist and advanced to the regional final game once.
The daughter of Mike and Fi White, she is undecided on a major upon enrollment at Indiana.
Coach Lyon on White
"Bekah is a player who is continuing to get better as she grows athletically and in the midfield role. As more of a defensive midfielder, I know Bekah is going to have a great career at IU as she strengthens her game. She is great in the air, a very good passer and a disciplined player. She too attended our camp so we have seen her play in person and liked what we saw."
Shattuck-St. Mary's [Minn.}/Chesterton (Ind.) High School
McCusker played her first three seasons of high school soccer at Chesterton (Ind.) High School before transferring to Shattuck-St. Mary's Soccer Academy in Minnesota. At Chesterton, she racked up a number of honors and accolades and led them to sectional and regional titles in 2007 and 2008, respectively. A three-time all-conference selection, she received second team all-state honors as a junior after leading the team with 26 goals. McCusker was also named first team all-district twice and the team's offenseive MVP all three years. In addition, she was named to the ODP state pool team as a junior. In her career at Chesterton, she scored 61 goals and handed out 18 assists.
She then decided to transfer to Shattuck-St. Mary's Soccer Academy in Minnesota, where they play competitive games from July through May. In her one season at SSM, she scored over 20 goals and assisted on at least 10 others.
The daughter of Paul and Vanessa McCusker, she plans to major in sports marketing upon enrolling at Indiana.
Coach Lyon on McCusker
"Kate does one thing but she does it very well and that's score goals. That's why she was recruited to IU and that's what she will do. Of course there are other things to her game but her ability to find the net is awesome. She loves the game of soccer and has spent the last year at Shattuck getting daily soccer practice and high-level games. She is yet another IU soccer camp alum."
