July 10, 2008
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana women's soccer signee Carly Samp will travel with her club team, Eclipse Select 89-90, to the United States Youth Soccer Association National Championships beginning on July 23. Samp, a Barrington, Ill., native, led Eclipse to the Region II Championship on June 25, earning the squad a berth at nationals.
Eclipse clinched a regional championship and a spot at nationals with a 2-1 victory over St. Louis Soccer Club in the championship game. In the semifinals, Eclipse knocked off Minnesota's Bangu Tsunami Blue 1-0 to earn its berth in the finals. The team emerged from its group with wins over Iowa's JUSC (2-0), the Michigan Hawks (2-1) and Minnesota's North Metro Fusion (3-0).
Samp and Eclipse will begin their quest for a national title on Wednesday, July 23, when they take on Texas' Sting 90 squad, the Region III champion. Eclipse will also face Colorado Rush Nike on July 24 and Pennsylvania's FC Delco Fury on July 25 as part of the round-robin opening round. The two top teams will square off in the Girls Under-18 final on Sunday, July 27. All games will be played at the Burns Park Soccer Complex in North Little Rock, Ark.
This is the second consecutive year that the Hoosiers have seen players competing for the USYSA national championship. Last year, five Hoosiers took home the Under-19 crown for the Carmel United Cyclones, while Taylor Fallon helped her Slammers FC club to a runner-up finish in the Under-18 division.
