Preseason Blog - Natalie O'Bryan
Aug. 16, 2007
Throughout the 2007 preseason, members of the IU women's soccer team will be giving fans a daily insider's look at what it's like to be a part of the squad. Today's blog entry is by sophomore Natalie O'Bryan.
Well, the first day of pre-season is over, and everyone survived! We kicked off the 2007 season the only way IUWS knows how, bright and early. We met at the track at 7 a.m. to run our beloved fitness test. The test went well and we even had some fans. Several IUPD members (Indiana University Police Division) were waiting to use the track after us. You could tell they were totally jealous of our new training gear.
After the test, we all headed to training tables to eat some breakfast. It's pretty hard to withstand the smell bacon and eggs immediately after running a fitness test, but I managed. Thank goodness for the wide variety of cereals IU athletics has to offer me!
After a quick outfit change and a re-application of deodorant I was headed to U-School for practice #1. Everyone looked stunning and full of excitement in their new cleats and practice gear. When the soccer balls were rolled out and it was time to practice, I got super pumped. It was great to be back at IU doing what I enjoy most, and that's playing soccer. The session consisted mostly of technical work, which means a lot of touches on the ball. We worked hard and ended with a short "chalk talk" concerning some of the goals and philosophies we hope to incorporate this year.
After session one was done it was time to head off to lunch. At lunch it was great to look around and see older teammates mingling with new freshmen, because here at IU we believe in the buddy system. Every two days an upperclassman is paired with a newbie in order to get to know them. I love being a buddy! My buddy and I, Chloe McKay, (hey, girl!) have a great time sharing personal tidbits and interesting facts about ourselves over lunch. I can't wait to see who my new buddy is going to be for tomorrow and the days to come!
After a much-needed afternoon nap it was time to lace the boots back up and head to the field. Practice #2 started off with a little bit of a curveball, but that's okay because here at IUWS we are always on our toes. We started the session by running the beep test, which is a fitness test designed to test your endurance physically and mentally. After completing the beep test the session continued on with some 1-v-1s and several short-sided games of 6-v-6.
It was a hot one, though. The humidity and heat were definitely taking a toll on everyone's tired legs, but we managed to push through because we rock. A hot shower and a cold ice bath were the icing on my pre-season day one cake and now it's time to relax. Day one down, several more to go!
Oh, and I almost forgot, if you see Katy Stewart out and about today wish her Happy Birthday! Turning 22 on the 2nd day of pre-season? What more could a girl ask for! HAPPY BIRTHDAY KATY!!! GO HOOSIERS!!
