Hoosiers Tabbed Sixth in Preseason Poll
Aug. 17, 2007
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's soccer team has been predicted to finish sixth in the Big Ten by conference coaches, the conference announced today. The Hoosiers, who finished fourth last season with a 5-4-1 record, return 15 letterwinners and six starters from last year's team.
Defending champion Penn State is the favorite once again, trailed close behind by Illinois and Purdue. All three schools were ranked in the preseason National Soccer Coaches Association of America Top 25, which was released earlier this week. Ohio State and Michigan, which finished sixth and fifth last year, respectively, round out the top five. Wisconsin, Michigan State, Northwestern, Minnesota and Iowa finish the rankings.
The Hoosiers face a tough schedule in 2006, with five ranked teams on the slate. In addition to the three conference foes, Indiana plays No. 13 Florida in Gainesville to open its season and will host No. 25 USC in the Hoosier Classic on Sept. 9. Penn State is ranked seventh, Illinois 20th and Purdue 15th in the poll.
Interestingly, IU faces an extremely tough road schedule in conference play, as it will play on the road against each of the conference's top five teams in the preseason rankings. The Hoosiers also face Michigan State on the road, and will host Wisconsin, Northwestern, Minnesota and Iowa throughout the season. IU also finishes the season in extremely difficult fashion, as its last three games will be at Ohio State, at Penn State and at Purdue.
The Hoosiers will face a strong preseason test early next week, as they travel to Missouri on Tuesday, Aug. 21, at 6:30 p.m. CDT in Columbia. In preparation for that, IU will play an intrasquad scrimmage at the women's soccer practice field on Saturday at 4 p.m. EDT.
