FORT WAYNE, Ind. Junior Kristen Zmijewskis goal midway through the second half proved to be the difference, as the Indiana womens soccer team downed Kentucky 2-1 in an exhibition match on Friday night. The preseason event was part of the fifth annual IPFW soccer showcase in Fort Wayne, Ind.
After a scoreless first half, the Hoosiers got on the board first when senior Kim Grodek netted a goal at the 50:31 mark.
IU would not enjoy the lead for long as Kentucky answered back just 27 seconds later. Callie Lanphier would notch the lone goal on the night for the Wildcats, at 50:58.
The Cream and Crimson regained the lead at the 61:20 mark, as the Hoosiers went on the attack ending with Zmijewskis goal.
Junior Lauren Fabbro started, and went the distance in goal for IU. Fabbro recorded three saves on the night, all in the second half of play. Indiana limited Kentucky to just nine shots, including four in the second stanza.
The Hoosiers also out shot Kentucky 11-9 in the game, and held a 7-4 advantage on shots on goal.
IU returns to action on Sunday, Aug. 22, as the Hoosiers play their final exhibition match at home against Western Kentucky. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
