Lawrence Named to Hermann Watch List
Aug. 19, 2008
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Junior defender Kelly Lawrence has been named to the 2008 Women's Hermann Trophy Watch List, the Missouri Athletic Club announced today. Forty-seven of the top Division I players in the nation comprise the list for collegiate women's soccer's top individual honor.
Lawrence is one of six Big Ten players to be named to the Watch List. Penn State leads the way with three selections (Zoe Bouchelle, Alyssa Naeher, Katie Schoepfer), while Illinois (Emily Zurrer) and Purdue (Jenny Bradfisch) each have one player on the list.
"This is a tremendous and well deserved honor for this young lady and the IU women's soccer program," head coach Mick Lyon said. "Her hard work and outstanding play has made her one of the top players in women's college soccer."
The recipients of the MAC's Hermann Trophy are selected by Division I head coaches who are current members of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. A list of 15 semifinalists is selected by a coaches committee in November, with three finalists announced in early December. They will invited to the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, Mo., for a news conference on Jan. 9, 2009, where the winner will be announced, with a presentation banquet following.
A native of Chigwell, Essex, England, Lawrence has represented her country in several international competitions, earning 22 caps for England. Most recently, she played with the Under-23 squad at the Nordic Cup and also played for the U-20 squad at the Four Nations Tournament in February.
Following the 2007 season, Lawrence was selected All-Great Lakes Region by both the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and by Soccer Buzz. She also became the first Hoosier defender in school history to pick up first team All-Big Ten laurels. She is just the second defender to have garnered all-conference honors twice in her career, joining Azure Johnson (1995, 1996) in that category. Lawrence and Emily Hotz (2000, 2001) are the only two Hoosiers to have picked up conference recognition in their freshman and sophomore campaigns.
Lawrence has emerged as one of the top 1-v-1 defenders in the conference and also finished with one goal and one assist on the season. In 2006, she was also a unanimous selection to the Big Ten's All-Freshman Team. During the summer of 2007, Lawrence also helped the England U-19 team to a runner-up finish at the 2007 U-19 UEFA Cup in Reykjavik, Iceland.
