    GAME DATA: The Indiana Women's Soccer team (0-0-0) opens against Xavier (0-0-0) at Bill Armstrong Stadium on Tuesday, September 1st at 6 p.m. The Hoosiers will also host IUPUI (0-0-0), which is in its first year at NCAA Division I, on Sunday, September 6 at 6 p.m.

    COACH JOE KELLEY: Coach Joe Kelley begins his sixth season as the IU women's soccer coach. He has a career and IU record of 50-36-1 after five seasons.

    SERIES HISTORY: Indiana will face Xavier for the fourth time in its brief history. The Hoosiers are 1-2-0 all time vs. Xavier: 1993 , L 3-1; 1994, W 1-0; 1996, L 1-0. This will be the first meeting between IU and IUPUI.

    THE WEEK IN REVIEW: The Hoosiers defeated Purdue 8-1 in an exhibition match at Karst Farm Park in Bloomington Friday. Goals: junior forward Tracy Grose, 4; freshman forward Sara Gustafson, 2; junior back Emily Etzkorn, 1; senior forward Kris Fosdick,1. Assists: Fosdick, 1; Gustafson, 1; senior forward Tory Dolan, 1; freshman midfielder Kelly Kramm, 1; junior forward Carrie Watts, 1; senior midfielder Megan Wallace, 1.

    THE HOOSIERS: IU finished the 1997 season 11-9, 4-5 Big Ten. The Hoosiers return five of their seven leading scorers from last season: senior forward Kris Fosdick (9-1-19), junior forward Tracy Grose (5-5-15), senior forward Tory Dolan (3-4-10), junior back Emily Etzkorn (3-2-8), sophomore back Wendy Graves (2-2-6). With the departure of Merit Elzey, junior goalkeeper Ashley Davis will take take over the starting role. Davis played in eight games in '97, starting five. She went 3-2-0 with a 1.80 goals against average and had 42 saves.

    XAVIER: The Musketeers defeated Northern Kentucky 3-0 in an exhibition match last week. Coach Ron Quinn (59-35-6/five years) returns a strong group that went 14-4, 9-2 Atlantic Ten in 1997. They return several key players including Annette Gruber, 1997 A-10 Rookie-of-the Year.

    "They're a hard working team," said Coach Kelley. "They're tough, physical, and well-organized."

    IUPUI: The Jaguars begin play at the Division I level under first-year head coach Jean Delaski. IUPUI will play Eastern Michigan and Miami (OH) before meeting the Hoosiers Sunday.

    "They have some good young players," said Kelley. "We have to respect every opponent."

    QUOTING COACH KELLEY: (on the season ahead) "We're ready for the season to begin. It's always good to see how far you've come. The only way to find out is to face good competition."

    (on the players) "We have a team in which all will be stars at some point this season. Each player is very capable of great accomplishments."

    (on starting at home) "It's always great to start at home. There are a few more distractions, but it's probably better to be in a familiar setting."

    OPENERS: The Hoosiers are a perfect 5-0 in season openers since gaining varsity status in 1993. IU defeated Cincinnati 3-1 to open the '93 season, Xavier 1-0 in '94, Kentucky 2-1 to open '95, Dayton 2-0 in '96, and Temple 9-0 in last season's opener.
