St. Louis, Mo.— In game one of the Toys for Tots/ Military Academies Classic, the Hoosiers fell to the Saint Louis Billikens, 1-0.

Saint Louis scored at the 76:45 mark when Kelly Furguson curled the ball over the top of the Hoosiers defense and Dee Guempel was there to head it in on the first bounce.

"The goal was given up because of a poor team decision," said Coach Lyon."We played a lot on the outside, and didn't penetrate enough. We had good efforts, but they weren't enough."

Despite the loss, it was an even match-up between the two teams, with both sides of the field seeing plenty of action. The Hoosiers took a total of nine shots, and the Billikens took seven.

One of the closest chances for the Hoosiers came with under six minutes left to play in the first half. Robin Barker carried the ball up the middle of the field and gave a one-touch pass to Kristen Zmijewksi who was in full sprint toward the goal. Zmijewski took one dribble and attempted a shot that was punched out by the Billikens goalkeeper Amanda Martin.

The Hoosiers front line fought desperately to get themselves on the board and had many close calls. The duo of Carrie DeFreece and Missy Vierling put pressure on the defense. In one play, DeFreece dribbled through the Billikens defense and gave a lead-in pass to Missy Vierling who challenged the goalkeeper and fell just short of getting a good foot on the ball.

Senior co-captain Emily Hotz had a strong outing for the Hoosiers in front of her hometown crowd, controlling the ball in the midfield taking three shots and setting up several scoring opportunities for her teammates.

Indiana will face their second opponent in the Toys for Tots/Military Academies Classic on Sunday at 11 a.m. in a match-up with Army.
