Three Hoosiers score in 3-0 Victory over Butler
September 12, 2003
Indianapolis, Ind. With goals from sophomore Kristen Zmijewski, and freshmen Missy Vierling and Megan Pipkens, the Indiana womens soccer team moved to 2-3-0 on the season after shutting out the Butler Bulldogs, 3-0 in front of a crowd of 1,522 at Lawrence Park.
The Hoosiers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after Kristen Zmijewski scored her first goal of the season on a rebounded long kick from Ali Brown to get the Hoosiers on the board just 2:29 into the game.
Ali took an awesome shot and I just happened to be there to rebound, said Zmijewski. It was great to get a goal within the first few minutes. That definitely helped us pick up momentum for the remainder of the game.
Missy Vierling continued the Hoosiers scoring spree, earning her first career goal at the 29:59 mark. Megan Pipkens was awarded the assist after she blew by her defender on the far right side of the box and crossed the ball into the middle. Vierling fought to get herself into scoring position and was able to tap the ball past Butlers goalkeeper Katie Sanders. Indianas two goals before the half marked the first time this season the Hoosiers led at the break.
Pipkens would strike again on offense with less than 36 minutes to play, this time notching an unassisted goal to give the Hoosiers a 3-0 advantage. The goal, that came from 15 yards out and flew high into the left side of the net, marked Pipkens second on the season.
The defense was also stellar, holding the Bulldogs to just five shots as well as holding the Bulldogs leading scorer Meredith Buemi ( 4 goals, 1 assist) scoreless.
Indiana will break into its Big Ten conference schedule next weekend when they travel to Madison Wis. and Minneapolis Minn. The Hoosiers take on the Wisconsin Badgers on Friday Sept. 19 at 7:30 p.m. and the Minnesota Gophers on Sunday Sept 21 at 1 p.m.
