HOOSIERS ROLL INTO BIG TEN PLAY

GAME DATA: The Indiana Women's Soccer team (4-0-0, 0-0-0 Big Ten)) starts its conference schedule this week. The Hoosiers travel to Penn State (4-0-0, 0-0-0 Big Ten) Friday September 18 for a 7 p.m. contest. The Hoosiers will then return home for a 1:30 p.m. game Sunday with Ohio State (4-0-0, 0-0-0).

COACH JOE KELLEY: Coach Joe Kelley is in his sixth season as the IU women's soccer coach. He has a career and IU record of 54-46-1.

SERIES HISTORY: Indiana is 1-4-0 against Penn State, including a tough 2-1 defeat at home in 1997. The only Hoosier victory came at the 1996 Big Ten tournament in Columbus, OH. The Hoosiers have had more success with Ohio State. IU holds a 4-2-0 series lead including a 3-2 win at Ohio State last season.

THE WEEK IN REVIEW: The Hoosiers defeated Wright State and St. Louis 1-0. Junior forward Tracy Grose scored the Hoosiers lone goal against Wright State and assisted junior back Emily Etzkorn with the game winner at St. Louis.

THE HOOSIERS: The Hoosiers are off to a roaring 4-0 start. (Best start, 5-0 in 1994.) Grose is leading the team in goals with four and in points with nine. Junior forward Abby Ryan and senior forward Kris Fosdick are right behind Grose in offensive production with eight points each (3 goals, 2 assists).

IU IN THE BIG TEN: (Individuals) The Hoosiers have three players in the top ten in points scored. Grose is in sixth with nine points and Fosdick and Ryan are tied for tenth with eight points. Grose is also tied for fifth in goals scored with four. Junior goalkeeper Ashley Davis is tied for the lead with three shutouts and is third in the Big Ten with a 0.27 goals against average. Junior forward Carrie Watts has three assists and is tied for the conference lead.

(Team) IU ranks second with a 0.25 goals against average.

OPPONENTS: (Penn State) The Nittany Lions return eight starters from the 1997 campaign. Head coach Pat Farmer led the Lions to a 15-7-1 and an NCAA appearance last season. Penn State has already defeated three top 20 teams: #18 Maryland, 3-0; #6 Virginia, 2-1; and #19 Harvard, 2-1.

"This could be one of their best teams ever," said Kelley. "Pat (Farmer) has a great program."

(Ohio State) The Buckeyes remained undefeated with a 2-1 win over Dayton and a 4-0 win over Purdue last week. Head coach Lori Walker is in her second year at OSU and led the Buckeyes to a 9-9-1 record in 1997.

"Ohio State is much improved over last year," said Kelley. "They are tough defensively and are really playing with a lot of confidence."

QUOTING COACH KELLEY: (on this past week) "We played well defensively. We were more confident and it showed with good effort s in both games."

STREAKS: Grose is the only IU player to score in all four games. She scored one goal in the win over Xavier, two goals against IUPUI, the game winner against Wright State, and assisted on the lone goal in the St. Louis contest.
