HOOSIERS DEFEAT BUCKEYES IN OVERTIME
September 20, 1998 HOOSIERS DEFEAT BUCKEYES IN OVERTIME
Bloomington, Ind. -- IU junior forward Tracy Grose came up huge in overtime as the Indiana (5-1, 1-1 Big Ten) women's soccer team defeated the Ohio State Buckeyes (5-2, 0-2 Big Ten) 2-1 Sunday afternoon at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
IU junior goalkeeper Ashley Davis made a great save about five minutes into overtime. Buckeye forward Melanie Vierling took a shot about 18 yards in front of the Hoosier net. Davis timed it just right and tipped the ball just over the cross bar.
"That is the most difficult play to make," said Davis. "I read the play just right and tipped the ball over the bar."
The Hoosiers took advantage of the new life just three minutes later. Davis boomed a kick out of the box that found Grose beyond midfield.
"Ashley booted a great ball," said Grose. "The defense seemed confused. I took the ball right up the middle, then the goalie came at me, and it was history."
Ohio State took control of the stalemate when Vielring scored from the right side at the 77 minute mark. The Hoosiers got the break they were looking for with about three minute left in regulation. The Buckeyes were called for a foul just outside their own box. IU junior forward Carrie Watts placed an indirect kick from Grose over Ohio State netminder Jennifer Odebrecht at the 87:36 mark.
Condition was the key for the Hoosiers at the end of regulation and in overtime.
"We wore them down," said IU coach Joe Kelley. "We have 18 starters on this team and they were all ready to play. It's great to have that kind of depth."
Next game: The Hoosiers travel to South Bend, Ind., for the Irish Key Bank Classic. IU will face #2 Notre Dame Friday September 25th at 7:30 p.m. and then battle Missouri Sunday at 11 a.m.
Next home game: The Hoosiers host Big Ten foe Wisconsin Friday October 2nd at 7 p.m.
