Velasquez Herrera Receives Pair of Weekly Awards From Big Ten
Sept. 21, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University women's soccer freshman Orianica Velasquez Herrera was named the Co-Offensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week by the Big Ten, the conference announced on Monday afternoon. The Bogota, Colombia, native scored all three goals last week to lead the Hoosiers to a pair of wins and extend its program-best 8-1-0 start to the season.
Velasquez Herrera has made quite a splash in her first season with the Hoosiers, as she currently leads the teams with four goals scored and is tied for the team lead with nine points.
On Wednesday, Velasquez Herrera scored the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Butler by corralling a loose ball inside the six-yard box and beating the Bulldog keeper for the goal. Then on Friday against Green Bay, she once again had a rebound find her in the box and she used her left foot to find the back of the goal to give IU a 1-0 lead early in the first half. Later in the second half, she was the beneficiary of a trio of touch passes that set her up inside the 18-yard box, where she was taken down by a Phoenix defender and was awarded a penalty kick. She calmly stepped up and drilled a low, hard shot to the left side of the goal to give Indiana a 2-0 lead. A couple minutes later she nearly completed the hat trick with a strong left-footed shot that the Green Bay keeper was able to deflect up and over the crossbar.
This is the second offensive player of the week award for the Hoosiers this year, as Devon Beach was named Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 7. The Freshman of the Week award is a new award handed out by the conference this season and Velasquez Herrera is the first IU women's soccer player to receive the award.
Indiana is currently 8-1-0, the best start in school history and is ranked No. 19 in the most recent Soccer America poll. The Hoosiers hit the road this weekend to open Big Ten play with a Friday night game against Northwestern (3-5-1) followed by a Sunday afternoon matchup at Wisconsin (4-4-1).
