HOOSIERS MOVE INTO TOP 25
September 21, 1998 HOOSIERS MOVE INTO TOP 25
The Indiana women's soccer team is #25 in this week's Soccer News Top 25.
The Hoosiers (5-1-0, 1-1-0 Big Ten) earned the ranking after splitting the first two games of their Big Ten Conference schedule. Friday, Indiana lost a very tough contest at #8 Penn State. Then finished the weekend Sunday with a 2-1 overtime victory over Ohio State in Bloomington.
"We beat the #8 team in the country 1-0 in the second half," said IU coach Joe Kelley. "We proved we can play with the best in the country."
Indiana will put its new ranking on the line in South Bend this weekend at the Irish Key Bank Classic. The Hoosiers will start the weekend with the host and #3 ranked Notre Dame Irish (6-1-0) Friday at 7:30 p.m. IU will conclude the weekend against Missouri Sunday at 11 a.m.
The last time Indiana made the Top 25 was after winning the 1996 Big Ten Tournament. The Hoosiers hope history doesn't repeat itself. In 1996, the Hoosiers lost their next game 8-1 to Notre Dame in the first round of the 1996 NCAA tournament.
