Kotynski Named Big Ten Player of the Week
Sept. 24, 2007
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Sophomore midfielder Christie Kotynski has been named Big Ten Player of the Week, the conference announced today. It marks the first weekly honor for Kotynski, who scored three goals and added one assist in Indiana's two games last week.
Kotynski started the week off with a crucial second-half goal against Butler on Wednesday night. With the Hoosiers down 1-0 in the 62nd minute, Kotynski hustled into the left corner on a long pass and played a ball off the defender to earn a corner. Kelly Lawrence sent the corner bending to the back post, where Kotynski headed the ball past the keeper for her third goal of the season. The goal turned momentum in the Hoosiers' favor and propelled them to a 2-1 victory over the Bulldogs.
On Sunday against Evansville, Kotynski one-upped herself with her first career multi-goal game. The Hudson, Ohio, native scored two goals and added an assist in IU's 4-0 victory over the Purple Aces. The five points were the most by a Hoosier since Kim Grodek scored two goals and added an assist against Butler on Oct. 29, 2004. Kotynski leads the Hoosiers in goals (5), assists (4) and points (14) this year.
Under three minutes into the second half, the Hoosiers took the lead on Kotynski's fourth goal of the season. After IU played the ball in on a corner, Kristin Arnold took the ball on the left side and sent it into the box, where Kotynski leapt and kicked the ball into the back of the net from point-blank range to make it 1-0 at 47:36.
The Hoosiers extended their lead to 2-0 in the 65th minute, with Liz Holby netting her second goal of the year. On the play, Kotynski flicked the ball ahead to Leigh Anne Cummings, who added a head flick of her own to send Holby one-on-one with the keeper. Holby buried the ball with a swift kick to the far side at 64:33.
Kotynski netted her second goal of the contest on a similar play to her first goal. After a corner, Chloe McKay got the ball on the far side from 25 yards and bent a ball deep into the box. Kotynski, charging the back post, redirected the ball to the left side for her second goal of the game and fifth of the year.
During the 2006 season, Kotynski finished tied for the team lead with four goals, and was named second team All-Big Ten and to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. She also was named All-Great Lakes Region by Soccer Buzz, which also named her a third team Freshman All-American.
The Hoosiers will open conference action next weekend, as they play host to Northwestern and Wisconsin. IU faces the Wildcats on Friday night at 7 p.m. at Armstrong Stadium and will take on UW on Sunday at 2 p.m.
