September 26, 1999 HOOSIERS FALL 2-1 TO NO. 5 PENN STATE
Bloomington, Indiana -- The Indiana women's soccer team fell 2-1 to No. 5 Penn State at Bill Armstrong Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Penn State freshman Christie Welsh scored both goals for the Nittany Lions (6-2-1, 2-0-1 Big Ten) in the second half. The first came at 50:21 on a breakaway as Welsh scored past IU goalkeeper Ashley Davis. Welsh scored the second at 78:30 by controlling the ball and firing through a crowd from 15 yards in front of goal.
The Hoosiers (2-4-3, 1-1-2 Big Ten) led 1-0 at the break. Sophomore Stacey Peterson took a pass from freshman Kristen Sprunger and shot it past Penn State goalkeeper Emily Oleksiuk in the 31st minute. The goal was the first of Peterson's career.
The Nittany Lions had a chance to tie the game late in the first half. Bonnie Young looked to have a shot on an open net, but IU back Jena Kluska made the save four yards in front of goal. The Hoosier defense stopped several other Nittany Lion opportunities. Penn State had an IU opponent record 13 corner kicks, but was unable to convert on any of them.
The Hoosiers took just four shots to Penn State's 11, but stayed close and had a chance to tie the game late in the second half. IU senior Tracy Grose fired a shot from 20 yards out with 11 minutes left forcing Oleksiuk to make a diving save that preserved the win for the Lions. The shot move Grose into second on the IU career shot list with 176, passing Kris Fosdick who recorded 175 shots from 1994-98.
The loss ended the Hoosiers 11 game home unbeaten streak and was their first loss at home since 1997.
IU returns to action at Michigan Friday October 1 at 4 p.m. and returns home Friday October 15 to host Illinois at 7 p.m.
