Stone Picks Up Big Ten Weekly Awards
Oct. 1, 2012
PARK RIDGE, Ill. - Indiana redshirt freshman goalkeeper Sarah Stone was named Co-Defensive Player of the Week and Co-Freshman of the Week by the Big Ten Conference on Monday (Oct. 1).
Stone, a native of Evansville, Ind., made her first collegiate start on Sunday against Northwestern and made six crucial saves over the course of the game to preserve the Hoosiers 1-0 victory.
She was only required to make one save in the first half, but Northwestern turned up the pressure on the IU goal in the second half and Stone was up to the challenge. She made three diving saves, including two that came off one-on-one situations with Wildcat attackers.
""Sarah has been working extremely hard in practice and we gave her the start in goal today," Indiana head coach Mick Lyon said after Sunday's game. "She responded big time today with a number of high-level saves that kept us in the game and then preserved the win."
Stone and the Hoosiers will return to the pitch on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET when they travel to Penn State to take on the Nittany Lions.
