October 2, 1998 HOOSIERS DOMINATE WISCONSIN
Bloomington, Ind. -- The Indiana women's soccer team handed Big Ten co-leader Wisconsin (5-4, 4-1 Big Ten) its first conference loss with a 4-0 pounding at Bill Armstrong Stadium Friday.
The Hoosiers (6-3, 2-1 Big Ten) dominated the Badgers from from start to finish. Junior forward Abby Ryan put Indiana on the board just 47 seconds into the game. IU junior forward Tracy Grose crossed a ball to junior forward Carrie Watts on the right side. Watts tapped the ball back across the front of the goalie box Ryan, who was charging in and placed the ball in the left corner of the goal.
Ryan scored her second goal just 11 minutes later on a pass from sophomore midfielder Kendal Willis.
In the second half, Grose made it 3-0 at 71:56 on an indirect kick from Watts. Watts concluded the scoring just 41 seconds later as Ryan moved put a mark in the assist column."
"I hope it's a statement game," said IU coach Joe Kelley. "This is what we can do when we put it all together. We can play with the best teams in the country."
Before tonight, Wisconsin was unscored upon in Big Ten play. Badger goalkeeper Briget Schwarting was third in the Big Ten with a 0.85 goals against average.
"They never really threatened," said Joe Kelley. "On defense, we did everything we wanted to do."
IU junior goalkeeper Ashley Davis picked up her fourth shutout of the season and moved into a tie for second on the IU career wins list.
Next home game: Indiana plays #11 Northwestern Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
