Indianapolis, Indiana -- The IU women's soccer team scored early, but came away with their fourth tie of the season against Butler at Kuntz Stadium Tuesday night.
The teams went back and fourth in the overtimes with IU taking four of its 14 shots and the Bulldogs (4-6-1) taking five of their 14 attempts in the extra sessions. Each of the three Indiana (2-5-4) shots in the second overtime came in the 111th and 112th minutes and forced Butler goalkeeper Meghan Partenheimer to make a save. IU senior Tracy Grose fired the first of the three, freshman Kate Kastl tried off the rebound, and freshman Kristen Sprunger took the third shot after a Butler turnover.
Butler's best chance to win came in the 104th minute as Erin Riley appeared to scored, but was called for offside. Angela Lehman also took a shot in the 105th minute, but IU goalkeeper Ashley Davis stopped it for her third save of the night. Davis finished the game with four saves.
The Hoosiers led 1-0 for most of the game. Kastl put IU on the board in the 16th minute with the first goal of her career. Freshman Emily Markwell garnered her first assist on the play. Markwell passed from the right side through the box where freshman Jenny Mann decoyed the defender and Kastl filled behind to put the ball in the lower left corner from eight yards out on the right side.
Butler tied the game at one at 89:22 as Kara Bryan scored from 18 yards out on a breakaway.
The Hoosiers next two games are at Minnesota, Friday at 3 p.m., and at Wisconsin, Sunday at 1 p.m. IU return as home to host Illinois Friday October 15 at 7 p.m.
