October 31, 1999 HOOSIERS FALL TO NO. 6 NOTRE DAME
Bloomington, Indiana -- The Indiana women's soccer team fought even with Notre Dame for 87 minutes at Bill Armstrong Stadium Sunday afternoon.
The Fighting Irish (15-3-0) scored three goals in 3:06 starting at 80:01 to put the game out of reach. Jenny Streiffer scored the goal at 80:01 from as Jenny Heft and Kara Brown assisted. Then Jen Grubb bent a corner kick directly into the net at 82:19, and Heft took a pass from Streiffer and fired it around IU goalkeeper Ashley Davis at 83:07.
Prior to the Streiffer goal the game looked to be headed for overtime. The two teams had battled tough with the Hoosiers (5-8-6) collecting 14 fouls to Notre Dame's 11, and neither team really threatening to break the 1-1 tie. Although the Irish outshot the Hoosiers 20-3, both had about the same number of solid scoring opportunities prior to the 80th minute.
The Hoosiers struck first in the second minute as Kristen Sprunger collected the ball in the middle of the zone and placed it in the net past Notre Dame keeper LaKeysia Beene. The play was set up by a Tracy Grose corner kick the was bounced around before Sprunger controlled the ball.
Davis, a senior, had another solid game in her final outing as a Hoosier. She recorded seven saves and continued to display the aggressive style that made her one of the best goalkeepers at the collegiate level. Grose and Carrie Watts, also seniors, each took one shot. Watts just missed adding another score as her shot hit the crossbar and bounced back into play before being deflected out of bounds. Grose finishes in second on the IU career list at 209 which is just four short of assistant coach Wendy Dillinger's record of 213 from 1993 to 1997.
