BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana sophomore forward Orianica Velasquez (Bogota, Colombia) was recently named to the Colombian Women's National Team and will compete at the 2010 Women's South American Championship from Nov. 4 through Nov. 21 in Ecuador.

The top two teams from this tournament will automatically qualify for the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup to be held in Germany from June 26 through July 17 next year.

"We are very excited for Ori to be given this opportunity with her country's national team," Indiana head coach Mick Lyon said. "She has a chance to fulfill her dream of playing in the World Cup and we wish her all the best. She will gain invaluable experience at this tournament that she will be able to bring back and share with our program."

Velasquez missed Sunday's 1-0 win over No. 18 Ohio State while she traveled back to Colombia to train with the team and she will miss the Hoosiers' season finale against Minnesota on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Armstrong Stadium.

Colombia is in Pool B along with Paraguay, Venezuela, Brazil and Uruguay. The schedule for the Colombian team is as follows:

Nov. 5 - Colombia vs. Paraguay
Nov. 9 - Colombia vs. Venzuela
Nov. 11 - Colombia vs. Brazil
Nov. 13 - Colombia vs. Uruguay

As Velasquez continues her play with the Colombian National Team, IUHoosiers.com will post updates from her as they become available to make sure to check back frequently.

Here is what she had to say as she left last weekend to train with the national team:

    Saturday, Oct. 30
"Hi, I hope you and the team have had a good trip (back to Bloomington from Penn State). I got to Colombia last night at 8:30 p.m., it was fast and everything was ok. This morning I kicked some balls and ran for 20 minutes and in the afternoon I practiced with the team. I thought I was going to feel bad with the altitude but I feel good. I feel like lack of breath but nothing that I cannot handle.

"Tomorrow we have a game against boys and we will travel Nov. 2."

    Monday, Nov. 1
"I'm so happy for the team and the victory (against Ohio State). It was good to hear that the team played with passion and heart. I am so proud.

"Today we played against the boys team I did not start, but I played 15 minutes in the first half and then most of the second half. We won 1-0 and I scored the goal.

"We leave tomorrow in the afternoon for Ecuador.

"Have a great day and please tell to the team that I am so happy because we beat (Ohio State) and now we have to finish good with our last game. Good Luck!!"
