November 6, 1998
DAVIS SAVES THE DAY FOR INDIANA State College, Pa. - IU junior goalkeeper Ashley Davis literally saved the day as Indiana won on penalty kicks over Minnesota at Penn State.
Davis had 11 saves on the day and made a great save on Minnesota's second penalty kick to give Indiana the victory and a date against Ohio State in the semifinals.
"I know this is it," Davis said. "We've got to go out and focus on today."
The Hoosiers (13-6-1) went up 2-0 on Minnesota (13-6-1) after junior forward Tracy Grose scored at 58:06. The Gophers anwered with two goals over the next 13 minutes to tie the game at two.
After two scoreless 15 minute overtime periods, it came down to penalty kick and the Gophers went first.
Both teams scored on their first shot, but the second was a different story. Minnesota's Noelle Papenhausen stepped to the ball. The shot was headed fro the upper right corner, but Davis had just enough reach to get the ball.
"Davis is the reason we won," said IU coach Joe Kelley. "Minnesota played very well today."
Both teams hit shots three and four, then Minnesota's Juli Montgomery hit the fifth shto to tie the penalty kicks at four. IU senior Kris Fosdick had the shot at the game-winner and came through without a hint of nervousness as the Hoosiers advance.
This win was critical for IU's postseason hopes. "We're both borderline teams (for the NCAA)," said Fosdick. "We both needed this win."
