HOOSIERS FALL IN BIG TEN SEMIFINAL State College, Pa. - The Indiana women's soccer team made a charge late but fell 3-2 to Ohio State (13-7-1) in the semifinals of the Big Ten Women's Soccer Tournament Saturday at Penn State.
With IU (13-7-1) trailing 3-1 early in the second half, senior forward Kris Fosdick took charge. Fosdick scored at 60:48 to make it 3-2, as she took three more shots in the second half. IU had 11 shots, eight of them coming in the second stanza.
"We had a lot more of an offensive attack today, than we did against Minnesota (on Friday)," said Fosdick.
The match started out a furious pace as the teams combined for three goals in the first 3:44 of the match. OSU's Becky Borchers gave the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead at 2:10 and IU countered 26 seconds later on a Tracy Grose goal. Grose's goal tied her for the IU single season record of 13 goals in a season. Ohio State answered 68 seconds later when Courtney Nein found the net off of a corner kick. "This is the best game we've played all year," said OSU coach Lori Walker. The OSU win avenges a 2-1 overtime loss to Indiana on Sept. 20.
IU entered the Ohio State match missing key personnel due to injuries.
"We knew what they were going to do," commented IU head coach Joe Kelley. "We just didn't have the horses to stop them."
Next game?: Indiana awaits for the announcement of the NCAA tournament field of 48 on Sunday (Nov. 8) at 9:30 p.m. for a possible at-large selection.
