HOOSIERS RECEIVE INVITATION TO BIG DANCE
November 9, 1998 HOOSIERS RECEIVE INVITATION TO BIG DANCE
Bloomington, Ind. -- There's a drama that comes just once a year and is known simply as "Selection Sunday."
For the Indiana women's soccer team, Sunday was that day. The team gathered together to watch the NCAA selection show via satellite from Kansas City, Kansas. The Hoosiers (13-7-1) knew they were on the bubble after losing 3-2 to Ohio State in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals, but had hope that an expanded field, from 32 to 48, would leave room for them.
After the first 36 teams were revealed, Big Ten members Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan were in, but Indiana had not appeared. Then the next bracket was released.
First up was Penn State (19-3-1), who received a first round bye. Then Wright State (8-10-2) appeared as a road team, and the moment the Hoosiers hoped for arrived as Indiana was shown as the first round host for the match vs.Wright State.
The whole team erupted and enjoyed the moment they had been waiting for all season.
The Hoosiers will host Wright State Wednesday at Bill Armstrong Stadium at 7 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for students. If Indiana wins, it will travel back to Penn State to face the Nittany Lions at 1 p.m. Sunday November 15.
This is the first at-large berth for the Hoosiers. IU's only other trip to the NCAA came after winning the Big Ten Tournament in 1996. The Hoosiers faced Notre Dame in the first round and lost 8-1.
