Kelly Lawrence Named Second Team All-Big Ten
Nov. 11, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Senior defender Kelly Lawrence was named Second Team All-Big Ten the conference office announced on Wednesday. Senior midfielder Jessica Boots was named the team's Sportsmanship Honoree as well.
The native of Chigwell, Essex, England, becomes the only player in IU women's soccer history to be named to either the first or second team All-Big Ten in four straight seasons.
"Kelly has had a fantastic career here at IU and this is worthy recognition for her terrific play," Indiana head coach Mick Lyon said. "Every now and then a special player crosses your path and Kelly is one of those special players. It has been a treat to coach her and watch her play for the Hoosiers over the last four years."
Lawrence had a goal and three assists this year to close her career with five goals and six assists for a total of 16 points. She helped the Hoosiers improve to 5-0-0 on the year with two second half assists as Indiana rallied for a 2-1 win at Mercer. The next weekend she had a goal and an assist on the game-winning goal at Hofstra.
She was instrumental in the Hoosiers win over then-No. 6 Florida earlier this season as well as the second-longest shutout streak in school history. The Hoosiers finished their season 10-7-2 overall and 2-6-2 in Big Ten play and fell just short of being selected for the NCAA Tournament. A string of four games in the final eight days of the season against the top four teams in the conference proved to be too much for the Hoosiers to overcome.
Boots returned from a knee injury to provide stability at her defensive midfield position, helping the Hoosiers to eight shutouts on the year.
