Berenter's First Collegiate Home Run Not Enough in 4-2 Loss to Pacific
Feb. 7, 2009
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Indiana softball team got a two-run home run from freshman Samantha Berenter (Poway, Calif.), the first of her collegiate career, with two outs in the seventh inning but it was not enough as the University of the Pacific came away with the 4-2 win at Easton Stadium on the campus of UCLA. The game was part of the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament hosted by the Bruins.
Pacific's starting pitcher Heidi Helberg (1-0) held the Indiana offense off the scoreboard for six-plus innings but the Hoosiers finally broke through with a pair of runs of the bat of Berenter. The first two batters in the inning went down in order before sophomore Sara Olson (Orland Park, Ill.) singled back up the middle to keep the inning alive for Berenter, who delivered. But the Hoosiers were still not done as senior Stephanie Pellerito (Tustin, Calif.) reached base on a throwing error by Alexa Rivera and moved to second base when the ball got loose down the right field line. The tying run came to the plate in the form of sophomore catcher Brittney Stein (Vancouver, Wash.). But Stein hit a screaming line drive to third base that was caught by Rivera to end the game and stranding the tenth Hoosier on the base paths in the game.
Sophomore pitcher Alyssa Maiese (Sewell, N.J.) was superb in the circle as she gave up four runs, three earned, on eight hits and two walks while striking out one in 4.1 innings of work but suffered the loss to fall to 0-1 on the year. Olson came on in relief and finished tossed the final 2.2 innings and surrendered just one hit while fanning three.
For the second time in as many games, senior shortstop Emily Bergeson (Cleveland, Ill.) collected two hits while Olson also picked up a pair of hits in the game.
The Tigers plated their first run in the top of the first on an RBI single by Nicole Matson and threatened to score another run with a runner at third and two outs but Maiese struck out Rivera looking.
In the second inning the Tigers' Kellee Wilson drove in the second run of the game on a fielder's choice groundout. The final two Pacific runs came in the top of the fifth inning after a a pair of singles and a double to start the inning pushed across the first run of the inning. The final run of the game came on a Rivera double to right center that scored Matson.
The Hoosiers will be back in action on Saturday evening when they take on No. 4 UCLA at Easton Stadium at 10 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. PT.
