New Mexico State Bats Come Alive Late To Hand Hoosiers First Loss of Season, 10-2
Feb. 11, 2012
LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Indiana (1-1) trailed just 3-0 entering the fifth inning against New Mexico State thanks to good team defense and a solid pitching effort by sophomore Meaghan Murphy. But the Aggies (1-0) broke things open with a pair of runs in the fifth inning and then five more in the sixth to invoke the eight-run rule, 10-2, after six innings. It was the Hoosiers' second game of the day at the Hotel Encanto Invitational on the campus of New Mexico State University.
Murphy (0-1) was able to work out of some tight situations in the early innings to keep the game within reach for the Indiana bats. But the bats were never able to put together a rally and eventually the hard-hitting Aggies found their groove. Last season, NMSU hit .341 as a team on their way to a WAC title and a 44-17 overall record.
Murphy is the only returning pitcher from last year for Indiana and she pitched total of 5.0 innings and that came in one game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
After NMSU made it 5-0 with one out in the fifth inning, freshman Lora Olson came on to relieve Murphy, who allowed five runs on 11 hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Olson allowed five runs on three hits over the final inning and a third.
Alex Newman (1-0) earned the win for NMSU, going the distance and allowing two runs on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
The Indiana offense once again came off the bat of sophomore Jenna Abraham, who clubbed her second two-run home run in as many games to bring the Hoosiers to within 5-2 in the top of the sixth inning.
Indiana returns to the NMSU Softball Complex on Saturday to take on Saint Mary's (Calif.) at 3:30 p.m. ET and Santa Clara at 5:30 p.m. ET.
