Hoosiers Buck The Broncos, 9-1, in Five Innings
Feb. 11, 2012
LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Senior catcher had four RBI and Amanda Wagner collected three hits to lead Indiana (2-2) to the 9-1 victory against Santa Clara (1-3) in five innings on Saturday at the Hotel Encanto Invitational on the campus of New Mexico State University.
The middle of the order carried a majority of the load at the plate for Indiana, with the 4-6 hitters going a combined 7-for-9 with four RBI and five runs scored. The four RBI matches a career-high for Gogreve (grand slam vs. Ohio State in 2011).
Sophomore pitcher Meaghan Murphy (1-1) got the start in the circle and went the distance, giving up one run on seven hits to go with a walk and a career-high eight strikeouts.
For the third time in four games, Indiana scored in the first inning thanks to Amanda Wagner, who lifted a fly ball down the right field line that stayed fair long enough for a two-run home run, her second of the season and on the day.
In the second inning, senior Samantha Berenter doubled down the left field line and then moved to third base on an illegal pitch. Then with one out, Gogreve lifted a fly ball to right field that allowed Berenter to tag and score from third easily, increasing the Indiana lead to 3-0.
After Santa Clara scored a run in the top of the fifth inning, the Indiana bats erupted for six runs in their half of the inning. Jenna Abraham led off with a double to center field and Brianna Meyer followed one out later with her second walk of the game. Amanda Wagner then singled to left field to drive in her third run of the game to make it 4-1. Shannaon Cawley singled to load the bases for Berenter and senior delivered a RBI single to center to up the lead to 5-1.
The inning continued with Breanna Saucedo drawing a bases loaded walk to make it 6-1, bringing Cassie Gogreve to the plate and the bases still loaded. She took the first pitch and then laced a double down the right field line that one-hopped to the wall and all three runners scored to invoke the run-rule at 9-1.
Indiana will conclude play this weekend with a game against UTEP in El Paso on the Miners home field at 12:00 p.m. ET. Live audio and gametracker live stats can be found at IUHoosiers.com.
