Hoosier Bats Go Silent Against No. 12 California

TEMPE, Ariz. - Indiana was not able to get its offense on track against No. 12 California on Sunday and the Golden Bears scored three runs over the first two innings and made stand up as they handed the Hoosiers a 3-0 defeat. It was the final game of at the Kajikawa Classic at the Tempe Sports Complex in Tempe, Ariz., where IU finishes with a 2-3 record.
"Cal is one of the top teams in the country and they were able to get ahead of us early and we were not able to respond today," said Indiana head coach Michelle Gardner.
Indiana (2-3) recorded just two hits in the contest, a pair of singles in the sixth inning by Kelsey Stander and Jenna Abraham but Cal pitcher Jolene Henderson (3-1) was able to work around them to earn the shutout win.
Morgan Melloh (1-3) started for Indiana and gave up three runs on seven hits and struck out eight while walking just one. Sophomore Jessica Dobson came on in relief to start the sixth inning and surrendered only two hits and fanning three to keep the score at 3-0.
Cal (3-1) scored a pair of runs in the first on a sac fly and an RBI single through the left side. Then in the second inning, an opposite field home run by Elia Reid bumped the lead to 3-0.
The Hoosiers return to tournament action next weekend at the Fairfield Inn and Suites USF Tournament in Clearwater, Fla., starting on Friday at 4 p.m. ET against UAB. They will also play DePaul on Friday at 8 p.m. ET.
